I am not a teen girl. I’m a 27-year-old woman, so yes, my teen days, are long behind me.
However, I’m still partial to a teen film, in fact, one of my favourite ways to spend an afternoon is snuggled up with one of my fave teen films on the sofa.
The last time that I watched Mean Girls, I thought to myself – ‘all girls should watch this.’
I remember when I watched it for the first time, I was 14/15 and it did actually teach me a lot, it taught me about life, and how I should be to other girls, and some may laugh or mock, but I feel like films like this, do have an important message that can teach you a lot at any age, and well definitely when you’re a teen.
I’m not sure if many teens read my blog, but if you do, here are some films you should definitely watch, and well if you’re more my age, then hopefully we can reminisce together about some amazing teen films, that yes are totally educational 😉
Mean Girls
Let’s start with the film that inspired this post, Mean Girls. The main thing I always take from this, is the speech that Lindsay Lohan’s character Cady makes during the Mathletes challenge.
Her quote of ‘ Calling somebody else fat, won’t make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn’t make you any smarter. And ruining Regina George’s life definitely didn’t make me any happier. All you can do in life is try to solve the problem in front of you.’ – I mean it’s so true isn’t it? I remember after watching this film, I thought how I needed to be more of a girls girl, and it’s something that has stuck with me ever since.
13 Going on 30
This film is another one of my faves, and I feel like the main lessons we learn from it are ;
1. To Not Wish Your Life Away (it does scare me that I’m very close to being thirty, flirty and thriving hahah.)
2. To Not Miss What’s In Front Of You : Jenna was so focused on being part of the cool clique, that she missed the love of her life ; Matt who was right in front of her.
3. That Thriller Will Always Get People Dancing.
Angus Thongs & Perfect Snogging
The ultimate British teen film – don’t @ me.
But seriously, this is something all teen girls (and boys if they wish) should watch. To learn to be more like Georgia (dress up in that olive costume if you want) to realise you do not have to change yourself for a boy as they should like you for you, and the fact that boys DO like funny girls. It’s one film that all teen girls should watch – seriously, and well maybe even just watch it because Robbie is really fit.
Easy A
This film will teach you something important, and that is how fast rumours can spread and to be careful with what you say. It also teaches you how it’s totally okay to not rush to lose your virginity, and how if you’re not ready- then that’s cool.
Freaky Friday
Oh gosh this film. I watched it age 13, walked out the cinema and announced to my parents that I was going to learn to play the guitar. Yeah that happened. I’m sure it wasn’t just me who said this after watching it for the first time though 😂
Anyways, Freaky Friday- why is it important? Well it teaches you about putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, I love how Cady and her Mum, saw each other from a different view-point, and gave them a better understanding of one another.
Love, Rosie
This film is in my top 3 of my favourite films, it’s not necessarily a teen film, but I’m gonna include it anyways. The reason why, because it teaches you to not just wait around for people. Alex and Rosie’s love story is so frustrating at times, and look how much time they wasted! If you like someone, tell them!
How! Many! Exclamation! Marks! Can! I! Use!
About Time
Okay another film which isn’t really a teen film, but I have to include it. I watched this one Sunday night when Henry was away, and I remember sitting on the sofa sobbing throughout the whole thing. It’s such a lovely film, but god it made me weep.
But it teaches such an important lesson; the importance of time.
I love the whole concept of living each day like you’ve lived it before, but only seeing the positive things. It shows you how important time is with your loved ones and how it shouldn’t be taken for granted.
Legally Blonde
We will finish with Legally Blonde, an iconic film, that inspired pre teen me. Elle’s determination to get into Harvard, succeed and show her loser ex boyfriend what he was missing, has inspired me many times throughout life. Showing how you can do anything you put your mind to, and how you’re not stupid if you enjoy things like fashion and beauty.
I know that I am probably missing a ton of films, so maybe I’ll do a part two at some point!
