I’m a creature of habit, which applies to most things in my life. In particular, my TV watching. I watch Friends most days, and will re watch my favourite TV shows such as Gossip Girl and Gilmore Girls till I feel like I know the characters more than they know themselves. The reason for this? Because I can never find much that compares. I’m quite picky with my TV watching, I know what I like, and I struggle to find new shows that take me away from Rachel, Blair and Lorelei.
However, last weekend, I found a new show and I can’t believe I’m dedicating a blog post to it, but it’s really got me hooked. I feel like I’ve been missing a programme like this, but didn’t know it- if that even makes sense?
But enough of the suspense, I’m talking about The Bold Type.
It’s on Amazon Prime Video, though it aired in the USA last year on the channel Freeform, and it’s filling a void that was left behind when Gossip Girl finished in 2012.
So let’s get to the nitty-gritty, why am I writing a whole blog post on it and why is it so great?
Well before I start telling you why you need to go and watch it right now, I’ll tell you what it’s about ;
It’s centres around three twenty something women, who work for a fashion magazine in NYC – that alone is my dream TV genre setting. Anyways, it focuses on their personal and work lives.
I feel like there’s been nothing like this on TV in ages, and I’ve not been able to relate to something so much, for a really long time.
Jane, Sutton and Kat, go through stuff that we all go through, well some stuff more realistic than others, but I’ve found myself watching and thinking ‘I’ve been in that situation!’ or know someone else who has.
It’s all about that weird phase of your twenties, where you graduated a few years ago and you have no idea what you’re doing with your life.
Whilst some elements of the show are pretty unrealistic – in the second episode, the editor publishes an article that Jane wrote to the magazine’s website, and everyone gets a notification and everyone reads it straight away, and tbh I doubt that anyone cares that much irl. Also Jane and Sutton seem to share a pretty nice apartment in NYC yet being on modest wages, and I don’t think that busy editor Jacqueline would really have time for little dramas, but hey we’ll overlook that.
But with this all being said, it’s so good to finally have something to watch that seems to get that weird twenty something phase that we all go through. The navigating your way through life, trying to land the dream job, not knowing what you want to do with your life, relationships and friendships. It’s empowering, it discusses real important issues, and celebrates strong female characters.
From editor Jacqueline who when you first meet, think will be like Miranda in The Devil Wears Prada, but instead turns out to be an inspiring woman and the dream boss who we’d all like to have, to the girls who go out and get what they want in life – without apologising or coming across like a bitch- which happens a lot in TV shows.
We need to see more girls like this on our TV and I do wish I’d seen this as a teenager. I feel like I would had more confidence when it came to my career. But hey, it’s still pretty inspiring to me now, even at 26 which is around the ages of the girls.
I’ve almost finished the first season already, and the second season airs in June, but if you do one thing this weekend, watch this on Prime, or sign up for the free month’s trial, cause it won’t take you long to watch the first season.
It’s been so long since I’ve watched a programme that resonated with me- however, I do have a hankering now to move to NYC and work for a fashion magazine haha.
Also the music in it is really good too, I’ve been listening to the spotify playlist all week!
Have you watched The Bold Type? What did you think?
And if you do go watch it – please let me know what you thought- I hope you love it as much as I did.
