I’ve been in denial about Autumn starting, but as I sit here looking out of the window, and seeing drizzly weather, I think it’s time to admit – that yes, Summer is over.
One reason why I’ve not been as excited for Autumn/Winter as usual, is because the thought of going back to jeans and boots, is not filling me with joy.
The past couple of years, I have found myself being in a bit of a style rut, I’ve worn the same thing over and over and never felt nice, or liked my outfits. I’ve hated everything in my wardrobe, and the thought of wearing the same stuff wasn’t exactly inspiring me.
So I’ve decided to change things up, and set myself some Wardrobe Rules.
I know, I need to get myself a life.
Out With The Old & In With The New
So the first thing I did when it came to sorting out my Autumn wardrobe, was to have a massive clear out. I was very ruthless, and ended up clearing out three big bags of clothes, my rules were ;
1. Have I worn this in the past 6 months? – If the answer was no, out it went.
2. Do I really like this item or just keeping it for the sake of it? – Again if I decided I didn’t really like it, out it went.
3. Would I probably wear it this A/W? – You’ve guessed it, if it was a no, it got removed from my wardrobe.
I managed to clear a good space in my wardrobe and get rid of some things that I didn’t really love, or hadn’t worn in ages. I gave two bags of clothes to charity, and one bag to go on eBay. Which leads me to my next point…
Make Money For New Clothes
Instead of just splashing my pay-day money on new clothes, I’m trying to be a bit stricter with myself. So I decided that if I wanted to get new Autumn clothes, I’d have to make the money to buy it. So I have put a load of clothes on eBay, and I’ve got more to put on for the next few weeks.
I thought that any money I make from this can be for my Autumn/Winter wardrobe, and I’m going to try to keep this up throughout the year, it will also help to make sure my wardrobe doesn’t get too crowded.
Outfit Planning
I’m quite guilty of just buying stuff cause I like it, but then never wearing it, or thinking ‘actually what do i wear this with?’
So this A/W I’m planning my outfits, before I even buy them.
Yes I know, I’m showing again why I need to get a life.
But I thought this would be good to make sure when I buy stuff, I will wear them.
I’ve also planned outfits with what I already have in my wardrobe, as I thought this will also stop me from having ‘I have nothing to wear moments.’
I want to buy items that go with one another, so it’s very easy to mix and match outfits.
Quality Over Quantity
I love a budget buy, and probably about 80% of my wardrobe is Primark, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
But I’ve realised with things like knit wear and basics like t-shirts, that sometimes spending a little more can help in the long run.
For example, over the past couple of years, I’ve bought budget jumpers, which I thought ‘wow what a barg’ but then they’ll go out of shape after one wash, or the quality will be shocking.
So this year, instead of buying 5 jumpers at £10, I’ll maybe only buy a couple but they’ll be a bit better quality, and a little more money, in the hope they’ll last longer and I’ll really love them.
I’ve found some pretty dreamy knits from & Other Stories, so I think one of the first things I’ll do with my eBay money is buy some from there, as they look like they will last really well.
I’ve also bought a couple of premium t shirts from Topshop, in the hope they’ll last a bit longer and sit better than the usual ones I buy.
I think I’ve come to the realisation I’d rather have a few things that I really love that maybe cost a little more, than loads of things I’m not too fussed about.
Streamline My Wardrobe
I also decided to cut the items in my wardrobe down, as I can find when you have too much stuff, you can get a bit overwhelmed with what to wear, and forget what you have.
I’m going to try to work on the perfect A/W capsule wardrobe, in which everything goes together. I feel like this will work better for outfit planning, and also help to keep my wardrobe nice and tidy!
Really Want Things Before I Buy Them
Finally, I’ve decided I need to stop just impulse buying clothes, as I tend to never wear them, or wear them once.
I’m going to set myself a little rule that I have to think about an item for at least 48 hours before I buy it, and be able to plan at least 2 outfits with it.
I thought this will not only help to keep my wardrobe items down, but also help with unnecessarily spending too!
I know I have probably become a bit boring/anal, but I do feel like this hopefully will help with saving some money, and also only buying stuff I really like.
So there we have it, there are my funny little Wardrobe rules, I’m hoping that this A/W I can get some items that I love to wear, and not feel like last A/W where I hated everything I wore, and felt a bit rubbish about myself!
Let me know if you have any wardrobe rules like this, and in tomorrow’s post I’ll be showing you what items I want to have in my wardrobe this A/W!
